Welcome to the Ithaca Independent.
Our mission is to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable, as Chicago journalist Finley Peter Dunne remarked in the 1800s.
We cover the Ithaca, New York area and focus on providing intelligent alternative viewpoints on issues facing residents. Unlike a corporate media giant, such as Gannett, we are beholden to no entity. Our goal is finding the truth and shedding light on topics that might not be covered because they have an insufficient lobbying force. Examples include promoting health coverage, improved housing, enhancing infrastructure (which sounds boring until you encounter the many potholes in Ithaca), and balanced coverage of local education.
Although an alternative media outlet, we don’t settle for alternative ethics. We abide by traditional journalistic practices while taking a stance. We encourage readers to become involved in the process of shaping Ithaca’s media landscape. Along with traditional methods, such as writing a letter to the editor or commenting on a news story, you can also tell us of stories happening in your neighborhood, offer to write about the news, offer your opinions via our editorial page, or send us photos or videos.
Lastly and most importantly, you can financially contribute to ensuring Ithaca’s independent media remains healthy. Because we don’t have a huge corporate parent, we rely on contributions both big and small. Individuals can make contributions as small as $20, while also we accept large contributions. Become part of the Ithaca Independent team today and return frequently for your local news.
